The High Line Park

Originally used in the 1930's as an elevated railway for heavy duty freight trains, The High Line was partially demolished in the 1960's and later completely abandoned after the last train ran in 1980, loaded with frozen turkeys. In 1999, the non-profit Friends of The High Line was founded, which lobbied to turn this stretch into public space.

Designers competed for the project, and their plans were displayed at Grand Central Terminal. With 720 teams and 36 countries represented, the winning firms were chosen, and in April 2006, construction began.

Privately funded with donations by the The High Line Park conservatory, the first section (from Gansevoort Street to West 20th Street) has been open to the public since 2009.

We love it!
